D.C. ready to host gun dealer at police headquarters

The District has offered its only federally licensed gun dealer the opportunity to rent space in the city’s police headquarters for $100 a month, Mayor Vince Gray said Wednesday.

Charles Sykes has been trying to find a new home for his gun dealership since he lost his lease in April, but has had trouble finding a spot that fit with the city’s zoning ordinances. He was the District’s only federally licensed gun dealer, which gun buyers need under federal law to bring guns purchased in other states into D.C.

Last week, the city asked the zoning board to create exception to the ordinances that would allow a gun dealer to set up shop in a police facility. The board gave its approval Thursday night, Gray said.

“In short, it’s really on Mr. Sykes, at this stage,” Gray said.
