Ben Sasse, the Republican senator from Nebraska elected in 2014, told CNN’s Jake Tapper Monday that he would support a third-party candidate if the GOP nominates Donald Trump and Democrats nominate Hillary Clinton. Sasses also said he expects more candidates to enter the presidential race.
“The nation that put a man on the moon can’t do any better than nominating two fundamentally dishonest New York liberals? I think the American people deserve a better choice than that, and I think they’ll get a better choice than that,” said Sasse. “If you got to a place where those are the two major-party nominees, and I certainly hope that they’re not, I’d have to look for a third-party option.”
“Do you have somebody in mind?” Tapper asked.
“No, but I believe that there will be more candidates that enter this race if the only choices that we get are two dishonest New York liberals,” Sasse responded. Watch the video below:
Sasse first announced his categorical opposition to both Trump and Clinton in a Facebook post Sunday evening directed at his “friends supporting Donald Trump.”
While he has not endorsed a candidate, Sasse has campaigned for both of his Senate colleagues Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.
