On this day, June 7, in 2002, Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel was convicted of beating Martha Moxley to death 27 years earlier. The two were 15 years old at the time.
On the eve of Halloween in 1975, Moxley was bludgeoned to death with a golf club in Greenwich, Conn. Part of the club shaft landed 100 feet away. Another piece was used to stab her neck.
The absence of any other physical evidence made the case difficult to prosecute. Skakel was not charged until 2000.
During the trial, the jury heard a taped interview with Skakel for a book proposal in which he sat in a tree outside her bedroom on the night of the murder.
Skakel was sentenced to 20 years to life.
