STORYLINE:

Hundreds of supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) gathered in front of the Presidential Palace in Islamabad on Friday to protest against alleged rigging of this month’s election.

Protesters held banners and chanted slogans against “Unacceptable elections.”

The PTI chairman Imran Khan addressed the crowd via videolink from his bed, as he is still suffering from serious back injuries after falling from a forklift during his election campaign.

He demanded that Pakistan’s Chief Justice and Election Commission respond to PTI’s concerns about vote rigging.

The Pakistan Muslim League-N party, led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, scored a resounding victory, winning close to a majority of the 272 directly-elected national assembly seats.

It is expected to form the next government.

PTI fell well short of its prediction that it would sweep the election, but still improved on its past performance.

It won at least 28 National Assembly seats, compared to only one seat in the 2002 election.

PTI has alleged vote rigging in different parts of the country, and the election commission has announced re-polling or recounting for eight national assembly seats.
