Two more New York House Republicans demand Rep. George Santos resign

Two more New York House Republicans have come forward demanding that Rep. George Santos (R-NY) resign over his resume falsehoods.

Reps. Nick LaLota and Brandon Williams are the latest of several New York Republican figures or organizations to advocate Santos’s resignation. He has faced scrutiny after being caught fabricating numerous parts of his biography to get himself elected.

“I definitely share their sentiments,” LaLota told Axios, referring to Republican colleagues who have called for Santos’s resignation.

“What he’s done is disgraceful, dishonorable, and unworthy of the office. I think he should resign,” LaLota said.

He went on to say that Santos’s behavior in Washington, D.C., further tarnished his image. LaLota claimed that Santos displayed the “OK” hand sign. The gesture has been co-opted as a white supremacist symbol.

“He hasn’t shown any remorse. He hasn’t corrected any of the behavior. He still has antics like showing a white power sign on the House floor. It’s not appropriate for our conference, for our country,” LaLota added.

Williams agreed with much of this sentiment and joined in calling on Santos to resign.

“As more revelations become public, I concur with the Nassau Republicans’ decision to request George Santos’s resignation. The constituents in NY-3 elected Representative Santos in part due to his biographical exaggerations and apparent deceptions. He must resign,” Williams said.

An investigation from the New York Times found that Santos had deliberately lied about numerous parts of his life — including claims that his grandparents were Ukrainian Jewish Holocaust survivors, that he worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and that he was Jewish, among many other things.

Soon after, he admitted to lying on several parts of his resume in an interview with the New York Post, and he said other falsehoods were the result of miscommunication.

More recently, allegations have surfaced of financial crimes from Santos. Those include campaign finance violations.
