First-timer’s guide to the Virginia Gold Cup

If you’re new to the Gold Cup events, consider these suggestions from Jade Floyd, of Silver Spring, and other veteran attendees to maximize your time and enjoyment:

» Remember the ride out there is more than an hour. Floyd suggests getting a car service or having a designated driver. You don’t want to drink and drive on the way there, as it is in the country.

» Women should wear flats or wedges. That’s especially important if it has rained and the ground is saturated.

» Pull out your most adorable hat or head scarf. This event is as preppy as they come, and you need to rock the pastels. And don’t forget the shades.

» Look on the Web for photos of previous years. Although attire varies widely, there are certain groups that are dressier than others. Think ahead.

» Be friendly. Everyone is there to have a good time, and people are happy to invite you into their areas often to share in the festivities.

» Bring your pet. There are cute dogs all over the place, and their owners love to dress them up.

» Invest in a hat. There is a hat contest, and judges walk through the crowds looking for the most creative hats.
