‘Spelling Bee’ comes to D.C.

When you come to Washington, you get political. That cute little musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” has come to town for a two-week run and, naturally, it’s decided to inject a bit of politics into the script.

One of the characters, “Logainne Schwarztandgrubenierre,” offered up this rant Tuesday night:

“This bee is about as outrageous as J.K. Rowling outing Dumbledore. My dads and I are protesting because she didn’t do it sooner. So instead of our usual ‘Harry Potter’ Tuesday night reading, we rented the latest DVD release of Michael Moore’s ‘Sicko’ … but are we the only ones who thought this was a documentary about Larry Craig’s bathroom activities?”

Then, “Douglas Panch,” the vice principal, interrupts, “Excuse me, little Miss Pelosi …”

If a pol shows up, it probably won’t be Bill Clinton. One character told the crowd that “Our usual pronouncer Hillary Clinton couldn’t be here tonight; she wanted to bring her husband along, and, well, there’s not enough room at the desk for two people.” Ouch.
