Schneiderman creates multi-state coalition to probe herbal supplement industry

ALBANY, N.Y. (Legal Newsline) – New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Tuesday a multi-state coalition that will look into the business practices of the herbal supplement industry.

Joining Schneiderman will be the state attorneys general from Connecticut, Indiana and Puerto Rico. The partnership will join top law enforcement officers protecting about 30 million people as they ensure businesses selling herbal supplements and retailers are complying with laws. Schneiderman

The coalition will look to increase transparency and make sure businesses are taking the right steps to validate claims as to the authenticity and purity of its prodcuts.

Schneiderman said consumers around the country deserve to be confident that the herbal supplements they buy are authentic, natural and pure. The coalition follows a recent analysis done by Schneiderman’s office, which found some brand name herbal supplements had contaminants, unlabeled plant species and other substances.

Following that analysis, several dozen class actions were filed nationwide.

“Clearly, the questions we raised about the herbal supplements sold in New York resonate outside of our borders,” Schneiderman said. “By joining together, and building on the long track record of state attorneys general upholding the rights of consumers, we can go further in investigating this industry and, as needed, in achieving reform. I look forward to collaborating with these partners on this vital work.”
