‘Multiple’ people dead in New Jersey shooting

Multiple people are dead after a massive gunbattle between police and two suspects in Jersey City, New Jersey.

One police officer was killed during the Tuesday gunfight and two more were injured in the shooting that was reportedly the result of a drug deal gone bad. Mayor Steven Fulop said at a press conference that “multiple” people were found dead inside a building where at least one of the suspects had set up a barricade. Police Chief Michael Kelly said at least six people in total were killed, including two potential suspects, three bystanders, and the officer.

Reports indicated that two suspects fired from a bodega. The gunfire began in a cemetery before at least one of the shooters fled to the bodega, according to reports. The storefront is reportedly a kosher store owned by a Jewish family from Brooklyn, New York.

Police said over the radio that gunmen were shooting at anyone they saw on the street and fired at a nearby school. According to the police scanner, students in the school were moved to one side of the building during the lengthy gunbattle. Several other schools across Jersey City were also put on lockdown during the shooting.

The wounded officers were taken to the hospital, where they are being treated for gunshot wounds.

“Please keep the officers of the Jersey City Police Department in your thoughts and prayers as they work to resolve the situation,” New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said. “We remain, as always, extraordinarily grateful for their service and their sacrifice.”

President Trump said in a Tuesday afternoon tweet that he has received a briefing on the matter.

“Just received a briefing on the horrific shootout that took place in Jersey City, NJ. Our thoughts & prayers are w/ the victims & their families during this very difficult & tragic time. We will continue to monitor the situation as we assist local & state officials on the ground,” Trump said.

The suspects were armed with long guns. According to the police scanner, at least one was a military-style weapon.

Police, SWAT, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, and other agents responded to the scene.
