Orbital wins multimillion dollar transit contract

For the second time this week, Dulles-based Orbital Sciences Corporation has been awarded a multimillion dollar contract to help manage a mass transportation system.

Orbital announced the Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority in Tennessee gave the company a $7.3 million contract to provide computer-assisted dispatch services and a vehicle location system. The company also is expected to provide services to help the authority improve its paratransit and fixed-route bus services.

Nashville has a fleet of 199 buses and 25 support vehicles. Orbital is expected to install their management system in phases over the next two years.

“Orbital is looking forward to working with Nashville MTA to install our integrated fleet management tools, which will help them continue to improve the level of its services that it offers the people of Nashville,” Orbital Transportation Services Senior Vice President David Kachemov said in a statement.

Earlier this week, Orbital received a $17.8 million contract from the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority in Philadelphia to provide similar services, bringing the weekly awards for Orbital Transportation Management Systems to more than $25 million.
