GOP congressman says efforts to overturn election results are a ‘scam’

A Republican lawmaker condemned efforts by his party and President Trump to overturn the 2020 election results as a “scam.”

During a Sunday interview on CNN, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who has been vocally critical of Trump’s claims of election fraud, said he believes there’s very little will in his party to actually turn the results in favor of Trump.

“It is a scam, and it is going to disappoint the people that believe this election was stolen, that think this is an opportunity to change it,” Kinzinger said.

The Illinois Republican’s comments follow a recent meeting by House Republicans with Trump and Vice President Mike Pence where the results of the Electoral College votes for President-elect Joe Biden was discussed. The group discussed ways to contest the results when they are certified in a joint session of Congress on Jan. 6.

Reps. Mo Brooks, Jody Hice, Jim Jordan, and Rep.-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene were among those who participated in the meeting, according to a report by Politico.

Trump remains engaged in litigation to contest the results of the election and has not conceded to Biden. Most of the lawsuits pushed by the Trump campaign and state Republican parties across the country have been thrown out by federal and state courts, including the Supreme Court.

Kinzinger touched on the legal losses in his opposition to fighting the results of the election.

“Even if you believe that somehow the courts were inept in this whole process, if somehow you believe that this whole election was stolen, the reality is there is no impetus to overthrow an election even if you want to, and there’s no ability to overthrow an election even if you want to,” Kinzinger said.

Earlier this month, the president announced a large rally in support of him will take place on Jan. 6 to protest the certification of the Electoral College votes.

Trump reiterated the event in a tweet on Sunday, promising more information to follow.

Inauguration Day is 23 days away.
