Md. program loses funding for abstinence-only approach

A Maryland sex education program has lost its federal funding for taking an abstinence-only approach in Allegany County Public Schools.

The Cumberland YMCA will shutter its three-year program as the Obama administration shifts more than $100 million in sex education funding to programs it says have a proven record in preventing teen pregnancies, the Associated Press reported.

Abstinence-only programs are fighting for $40 million in grant money this year, as more than $160 million goes to programs that include information on birth control methods.
