Ellicott City man sentenced in investment fraud case
A federal judge Friday sentenced an Ellicott City man to 27 months in prison for defrauding investors and his uncle?s Columbia-based accounting firm.
Accountant John R. Ring, now of Bluffton, S.C., defrauded several church acquaintances and clients of his uncle?s firm, where he worked, of about $450,000, prosecutors said.
Ring, 26, told clients they could invest in Old Bay Investments LLC, a company formed by the firm?s partners to purchase real estate in South Carolina, despite knowing the partners were not opening the company to outside investors.
Ring instructed investors to wire transfer funds to a bank account he managed for the firm, and also altered investment checks and deposited them in his bank account. He provided some investors with false balance sheets, profit-loss statements and other records. ? Jaime Malarkey
