Oct. 20: Old Rag hike, Shenandoah National Park, 8:30 a.m. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club’s Vigorous Hikers group is leading this 16-mile hike up Old Rag Mountain and Corbin Mountain. Info: potomacappalachian.org.

Oct. 21: New members meeting, Vienna, 7:30 p.m. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club is holding a gathering for interested hikers to meet new members, see the headquarters and ask questions. Info: potomacappalachian.org.

Oct. 24: Big Schloss hike, Great North Mountain, 8 a.m. The Capital Hiking Club is hiking to Big Schloss and Tibbett Knob. The hike is 9.1 miles, but those who want to hike a shorter distance can go 5.1 miles. Info: capitalhikingclub.org.

Oct. 28: Urban Trailers hike, Foggy Bottom Metro station, 6:15 p.m. The route will take hikers along the Potomac River, past the World War II Memorial, around the Tidal Basin and through the Mall, ending at Metro Center. Info: capitalhikingclub.org.

RUNNING

Oct. 24: World Peace 5K, Foggy Bottom, 9 a.m. This race and walk will be held throughout the George Washington University area and is sponsored by Sister Cities International. Info: www.sister-cities.org/raceforpeace.

Oct. 24: Black Hill Cross Country 10K, Germantown, 9 a.m. This 10K will be held in Black Hills Regional Park. The Montgomery County Road Runners Club promises rocks, roots and challenging trails. Info: mcrrc.org.

Oct. 24: Wolf Trap Run for the Arts, Wolf Trap, 8 a.m. This 5K is a certified course through Wolf Trap. Festivities also include a Howl-O-Ween Fun Run, costume contest and live entertainment. Info: wolftrap.org.

Nov. 1: Backyard Burn Trail Running Series, Annandale, 9 a.m. The Backyard Burn is a series of 5- and 10-mile trail races in Northern Virginia. The race, to be held in Wakefield Park, will be on mostly flat land and includes cinder trails, stream crossings and single track. Info: ex2adventures.com.
