Take Five: This weekend’s best bets for fun

Peach Pit ’90s Dance Party, Saturday Looking to get down to a little Hanson, Notorious B.I.G. or Backstreet Boys?

Then Saturday night’s Peach Pit dance party at DC9 may be the place for you.

Peach Pit is the brainchild of local DJ Matt Bailer. The 33-year-old founded the dance night in October of 2009, after seeing a saturation of ’80s parties in the area and realizing a dearth of ’90s events. (Those in the know will get the obvious “90210” reference in the dance night’s title).

“It kind of just took off,”said Bailer, who is also behind the local Mixtape party. “People just love the era.”

Bailer spins songs that anyone of a certain age will know, from the Spin Doctors and the Spice Girls to more obscure stuff fans may not remember the name of but will remember the beat or cheesy video. Even tracks like Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn,” which is difficult to dance to, receive a warm singalong reception.

“Pretty much anything you can dance to or sing along to is fair game,” said Bailer, who suggests getting to DC 9 early.

For a man who came of age musically in the ’90s, the songs of that decade resonate with Bailer.

“Almost every song we play takes me back to a specific moment in life,” he said.

And maybe you too.

Or like the Spice Girls said, “Zigazig-ha!”
