It happens nearly every time senior midfielder Brittany Kalkstein of Roland Park steps on the field. She will display a fiery spirit, which will attract a respectful look from opposing coaches.
“She was fiercely competitive and you could see it in her eyes that she wanted to do anything to win a game,” Virginia lacrosse coach Julie Myers said of Kalkstein, who will play in Charlottesville next season. “She has great skills, great size and the sheer will to get the job done.”
“She has a tremendous presence on the field and you can?t watch a game without noticing her,” said first-year Roland Park coach Erin Brown-Millon, who played lacrosse for the University of Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference from 1988-1990. “Individually, she has done some great things for this program and she should be able to tranlsate those skills to the ACC.”
That versatility in athletics is evident in other sports, too. The 5-feet-10 standout also plays basketball and field hockey for Roland Park.
Last fall, she scored 21 of the Reds? 48 goals, leading the field hockey team to its second straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship. As a first-team All-State selection by area coaches, Kalkstein finished her three-year varsity career with 40 goals and 15 assists on the lacrosse team.
“I get bored really easily, and I can?t imagine not playing some type of sport all-year around,” said Kalkstein, whose team beat Notre Dame Prep, 13-3, on Monday. “Fortunately, I am changing gears in different seasons, and the sports are not all at the same time, otherwise it might get pretty hectic.”
However, her busy lifestyle and involvement in anarray of activities may serve her well as she turns her focus to lacrosse in the fall.
“She has a lot of experience in so many things that she can stuff in her back pocket before she comes here,” Myers said. “We think she is one of our biggest recruits and we are fortunate to bring in one of the area?s best to step right in and help us win some games.”
