[WATCH] MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry wears tampon earrings in light of Texas abortion bill protests

It was all about accessorizing Sunday morning as MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry made a fashion statement to make a political point. The latest Texas abortion regulations impacted Harris-Perry so much she decided to trade in her own red dangling earrings for tampons.

With her hair pulled back, the morning talk-show host casually removed her own earrings and replaced them with tampon earrings — supposedly a gift from her producer — without ever letting the substitution stop the flow of her show.

“You’ll remember that the Texas state legislature said that you couldn’t bring tampons in when they were going, these woman, to in fact stand up for their own reproductive rights. You weren’t allowed to initially bring tampons,” Harris-Perry told viewers while donning the tampon earrings during her show.

The host was referring to security’s confiscation of the feminine hygiene products, along with other projectiles, as pro-choice activists entered the state Capitol during the second vote on a bill banning abortions after 20 weeks. The authorities believed protesters entered the building with the unconventional intent to wield the tampons and hurl them at state legislators during the proceedings.

Harris-Perry’s new jewelry served more than just to match the black and white of her shirt. She suggested the tampon earrings may be good preparation for ladies in case they need them when entering an intense political debate in the future.

“So just in case that ever happens again, ladies, you can just bring them on your earrings,” she said.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) signed the state’s new abortion restrictions into law Thursday, but Harris-Perry said the regulations were really just a part of the “radical conservative agenda.” Along with her guests, she implied that “abortions are extremely safe is a statement that may not remain true” because of the new regulations, which apparently would force women to flee to Mexico or other states.
