By the Numbers: Obama’s Al Green boost

490 perfect: Amount by which sales of Al Green‘s hit, “Let’s Stay Together,” spiked after President Obama sang a few bars at a Jan. 19 fundraising event. The president’s unexpected crooning went viral the next day — drawing more than 4 million views while sending downloads of the song to more than 16,000 the week of Jan. 22 — the best sales week for the song since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003. And it may have just been a couple of bars from the first verse (before Green’s famous vocal flourishes later on), but Green told Billboard.com he was delighted with Obama’s performance, saying, “I was thrilled that the President mentioned my name and that if he can get the economy going and do all that he wants to do, then we will ALL be together.”
