New York’s iconic Empire State Building will light up red and yellow Wednesday in honor of the 60th anniversary of communist China. The Chinese consul, Peng Keyu, and other officials will take part in the lighting ceremony which will bathe the skyscraper in the colors of the People’s Republic until Thursday, Empire State Building representatives said in a statement.
Hey, the Red Chinese only killed 50 or 60 million of their own people, why not celebrate that achievement with a special lighting scheme. The only question is what colors they use for Stalin’s birthday, since obviously they don’t want people confused as to which genocidal regime they’re paying tribute to on any particular night. Update: A reader sends in this story from last week that has supporters of the Iranian opposition requesting that the Empire State Building lit up in the green to mark their rallies against A’jad during his speech at the UN only to have their request denied because…the Empire State Building doesn’t get involved in political issues:
Iranian activists — trying to blanket New York City with their trademark green color — lobbied to bathe the top of the Empire State Building in green light all this week during their rallies against Iran’s president, who is visiting the United Nations. The request was rejected… Ms. Goldwater received a reply dated Sept. 18 from the Empire State Building Co. LLC, which decides on lighting requests, refusing the application. “After careful consideration of your proposal, unfortunately, the decision was made to deny your request,” wrote Nicole Grzywacz of the building’s public-relations office. The office wouldn’t comment on the reason, but those familiar with the building’s practice said it avoids taking sides in political disputes.
As if no one would dispute the political legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party sixty years of rule over mainland China.
