PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Environmental officials in Rhode Island say the state is opening new waters to shellfish harvesting because of improvements in water quality.

The Department of Environmental Management says additional areas of Upper Narragansett Bay, Mount Hope Bay and the Kickemuit River are open to shell fishing as of sunrise Saturday. The department attributes the expansion to better measures to improve water pollution and improved water quality.
