Seen enough ridiculous royal baby news coverage to last a lifetime? So has ‘The Daily Show’ fill-in host John Oliver.
Oliver slammed CNN and other news networks on Tuesday night for their odd and overdone coverage of the birth of William and Kate’s first child.
“In response to the royal birth, the news has gone on maternity leave,” the host said.
He singled out CNN specifically for interviewing another random British woman in labor as part of their coverage and showing the entire cannon salute.
He also mocked one CNN correspondent who said Prince William would call the queen and say, “Hello granny. It’s a baby.”
“It’s a baby,” Oliver said. “That’s genuinely worth mentioning. Just how inbred is this family?”
Oliver also spoke to correspondent Samantha Bee, who explained that reporters covering the birth are now experiencing postpartum depression.
The fill-in host also mocked the general pomp and circumstance surrounding the baby’s birth, including the “golden easel” on which the birth announcement was placed.
“Don’t look directly at it,” he advised. “You’ll make it dirty with your peasant eyes.”
He noted that while some found out about the birth via the announcement on the easel, others heard it from “the screaming mouth of Captain Crunch’s drunk uncle,” making fun of the average British citizen who decided to dress up and shout the birth announcement.
