Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain on Tuesday refused to weigh in on President-elect Trump’s call to criminalize flag burning.
“My time is devoted to trying to make sure this nation is secured, not to comment on every comment of Mr. Trump’s,” McCain told CNN.
McCain, who was held as a prisoner of war, said he believes there should be “some punishment,” but acknowledged the 1990 Supreme Court decision that protects the act under the First Amendment.
“I do not approve of it and I think there’s other ways for people to express their views rather than burn a flag that so many Americans fought and died for.”
