House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz said Tuesday that the call by the ranking member on his committee for an investigation into House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes is “ridiculous.”
Nunes has been under fire over the past week for telling the White House about new information that President Trump and his associates might have been caught up in government surveillance before he told members of his own committee.
Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., not only called for an investigation into Nunes but also said Nunes “put a cloud over” his committee’s ability to conduct a credible probe into Trump’s ties to Russia done.
Asked about this on by MSNBC’s Greta Van Susteren on Tuesday, Chaffetz said, “That’s ridiculous.”
He went on to defend Nunes’ trustworthiness.
“It doesn’t even pass the basic sniff test,” Chaffetz added. “[Cummings] may not like the way chairman Nunes is doing this or that, he may say he made a mistake on this or that, but Devin Nunes is a man of high integrity.”
