Off-duty officer shot at nigthclub job

An off-duty Prince George’s County police officer working as a security guard at a Langley Park nightclub was shot in the leg early Saturday morning by a man she had thrown out of the club.

Three people involved in a dispute inside the Galaxy club, located on the 2000 block of University Boulevard, were told to leave. All three — a young man and two women — got into a white Honda, and before leaving the parking lot, the man driving reached through the passenger window and fired shots toward the club’s entrance, according to police.

Officer Rachael Jacob was struck in the leg, according to police spokeswoman Julie Parker. The four-year veteran is recovering from surgery Saturday morning to have the bullet removed.

Other off-duty officers at the club returned fire and chased the Honda down University Boulevard, eventually apprehending all three suspects and the securing the firearm police suspect was used in the shooting.

Police charged Kelly Gilliss, 32, of the 11000 block of Cherry Hill Road in Beltsville, with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.

The shooting was the fifth time in about 18 months that a Prince George’s police officer has either been shot or shot at, according to Parker.
