Thomas didn’t send his son to DCPS because of baseball

Those of you who live in the District and have a pulse may have heard that Ward 5 Councilman Harry “Tommy” Thomas Jr. has resigned his office and admitted to essentially stealing $350,000, much of which was supposed to be spent on youth baseball programs.

So here’s a quick, amusing, delicious detail.

In June, The Washington Examiner wrote about how D.C. council members don’t send their kids to neighborhood public schools and asked our lawmakers: Why?

Thomas said he sent his son to St. John’s College High School — a private school where annual tuition exceeds $15,000 — instead of neighborhood school Springarn — where 16 percent of students can read proficiently — because his son wanted to play baseball.

“He’s one of six pitchers in his school in a rotation, so he doesn’t get burnt out,” Thomas told The Examiner. “If I send him to a school like Springarn and he’s a baseball kid, he’s pitching half the game.”

So, you know. Moment of zen.
