Iran’s leader accuses US weapons ‘mafia’ of manufacturing Ukraine war

The crisis in Ukraine is the result of a conspiracy among the U.S. military industry to increase profits, according to Iran’s leader Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei said in remarks reported Wednesday that the West, and particularly the United States, suffers from moral rot that compels it to act based on greed alone.

“Much of the moral wickedness that was present in Mecca and on the Arabian peninsula and which the Prophet fought against exists today in the so-called civilized Western world, in a much more organized, extreme, and widespread fashion,” Khamenei said. “In general, greed is at the foundation of life in Western civilization. The basis for all Western values nowadays is money. Everything is measured by money.”

“In general, the regime of the United States of America is a regime that creates crises and makes a living off of crises,” he continued. “The power mafia networks in America live off of the different crises in the world. In principle, America is a mafia regime. They create crises. If they couldn’t create crises, the weapons manufacturers in America would not be able to make optimal profits. Therefore, they have no choice but to cause crises across the world in order to maximize the profits of these mafias.”

Ukraine, he said, is the latest victim of this sales tactic, with the U.S. priming it for war by “interfering in Ukraine’s internal affairs, creating anti-governmental associations, and giving rise to a ‘velvet movement,’ and turning it into a color coup.”

Khamenei’s comments come as the nearly yearlong negotiations between Russia, Iran, and the U.S. for a new Iranian nuclear deal are drawing to a close, several officials involved in the talks said this week. The Iranians demanded President Joe Biden lift the sanctions the Trump administration imposed on their possession of nuclear technology. U.S. officials have said they would consider lifting only the Trump-era sanctions “inconsistent” with U.S. obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, but Iranian officials have applied additional pressure by continuing to expand their nuclear program.
