McDonnell to feds: Balance your books!

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, citing an insidiously increasing national debt, has sent down a resolution for the state legislature to consider that would call on Congress to adopt a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

“At the state level, we balance our budgets, and it is time for Washington to do the same,” McDonnell said.

He noted that Virginia has cut $6 billion out of its last two budgets and reduced state spending to 2006 levels.

The resolution will be sponsored by Del. Ben Cline, R-Lexington.

Cline said the request for a constitutional convention on a balanced budget amendment is “a step in the right direction toward reining in federal government spending and tackling the federal debt.”
