‘The Daily Show’ hilariously taunts Congress for bipartisan failure to pass NSA amendment

John Oliver has great news for Americans! Congress was finally working together — but that doesn’t mean it got anything done.

On Monday night’s episode of ‘The Daily Show,‘ the fill-in host commended both sides of the aisle for rallying around Rep. Justin Amash’s (R-Mich.) amendment to defund the National Security Agency’s phone records program.

“What you’re about to witness has never been captured on camera before,” Oliver whispered to viewers. “Democrats and Republicans, both natural predators, feasting on the same talking point.”

Yet, as the host pointed out, the bipartisan group that supported Amash’s amendment was offset by another bipartisan group that opposed it. And that group included such big players like Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) and President Barack Obama.

“Yes, John Boehner and President Obama agree on something,” Oliver mocked. “The only other things they’ve ever agreed on were: one, sometimes you need a good cry, two, Michael Keaton is the best Batman, and three, Brazil nuts are nothing more than packing material for all the other nuts in the mix.”

But there was one other D.C. notable teaming up with Boehner and Obama — Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.).

“You know, Mr. President, when Michele Bachmann is on your side, you may want to look at the side that you are on,” Oliver said, before joking that he wears a bracelet that reads ‘What wouldn’t Michele Bachmann do?’

Oliver also noted during the segment that Americans want to keep their personal information out of the hands of the government — while posting it on social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. The host then couldn’t resist taking a shot at the career connection website, screaming for it to stop sending him annoying emails.

“I don’t even understand what you do, LinkedIn!” Oliver shouted. “You seem to have monetized irritating people!”

Despite the bipartisan effort and support from the American people, Congress didn’t pass Amash’s amendment.

“The system works!” Oliver exclaimed. “Once again, Congress fails to get something done. The important thing is this time, they’ve failed to get it done together.”
