WATCH LIVE: Schiff, Swalwell, and Omar to hold press conference on committee removals

Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Eric Swalwell (D-CA) are holding a press conference on Wednesday to address the decision made by Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to remove them from their respective committees.

McCarthy booted Schiff and Swalwell from their positions on the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, something he promised to do during his campaign. He is poising to also remove Omar from her committee assignments sometime this week.

The removals follow the ones that Democrats made in 2021 when they removed Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ) on the grounds that they encouraged political violence. The pair was reinstated to committee assignments earlier this month by McCarthy.

Swalwell has said that McCarthy will regret his decision for giving him “more free time” because he is “not going to be quiet,” he said to MSNBC on Monday prior to his removal.

Schiff has been a target since he led hearings for the first impeachment trial against former President Donald Trump and continued to criticize Republicans for the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He called McCarthy’s decision “petty, political payback.”

The trio is expected to condemn McCarthy for his “partisan political stunt,” according to a release.

House Democrats, and even some Republicans, have expressed their opposition or outright disapproval at the speaker’s decision to remove the trio from their assignments.

Reps. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) and Nancy Mace (R-SC) have stated that they will not support McCarthy’s measure to remove Omar from her position on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Spartz compared Pelosi’s removal of Greene and Gosar to McCarthy’s removal of Schiff and Swalwell, stating that “two wrongs do not make a right.”

The press conference is set to begin on Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. ET.
