Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump announced Monday that he is considering a trip to Orlando in the wake of the deadly attack that took place early Sunday where 49 people were killed at a gay nightclub, after which the gunman was shot.
When pressed by Sean Hannity on his radio program if he planned to make a trip there, Trump said that “I may go,” but said he feared doing so because it would look politically driven. The presumptive nominee made the remark after giving an extended speech at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, during which he focused on the attack, terrorism and immigration.
“I may go. I’ve been asked to go. We’re going to see what happens,” Trump said.
“You know, I want to do it. From the heart, I would do it, but I don’t want to be accused of doing it for political reasons and that’ll be immediately — that’s will be said, as you know,” Trump told Hannity. “So I’ll make that determination, and I would love to be there with them.”
In his speech earlier Monday, Trump renewed his call for a temporary ban on non-American Muslims from entering the United States. He initially made the call on December 7, which was roundly denounced by his opponents for the GOP nomination.
“When I am elected, I will suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies,” Trump said during the speech.
He also reaffirmed that the ban would remain in place until “we understand how to end” threats of terror on the homeland before also hitting the Obama administration for its “failed” policies in the fight against the Islamic State and terror in the Middle East.
