Price: Insurance for All Has ‘Always Been My Stated Goal’

Rep. Tom Price, the nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services in the new presidential administration, said during his confirmation hearing Wednesday that he was committed to President-elect Donald Trump’s vision of providing “insurance for everybody.”

His comment came about after Sen. Patty Murray, the Democratic ranking member on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee conducting the hearing, contrasted GOP plans to repeal and replace Obamacare with Trump’s interview last weekend with the Washington Post.

MURRAY: President-elect Trump and Republicans in Congress have promised to deliver a plan that prevents anyone from losing coverage and leaves no one worse off. Just days ago, President-elect Trump said his plan would provide “insurance for everybody.” Do you share those goals? PRICE: I think it is absolutely imperative that we have a system in place that has patients at the center and allows for every single American to have the opportunity to gain access to the kind of coverage they want. MURRAY: So, you share his goal of “insurance for everybody?” PRICE: That’s been always my stated goal. That’s what we’ve worked on …throughout my entire public career.

Although Republicans have moved forward with legislative efforts to repeal Obamacare’s budgetary provisions, they have yet to choose among several different plans to replace the health care law, including Price’s own bill. Democrats have made it a top priority to fight repeal of the signature healthcare legislation, as well as Price’s nomination.
