Fire alarm saves building in Harford

A small fire could have destroyed a Forest Hill business, but its automatic fire alarm saved it, officials said.

No one was in the advertising company?s building at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, when a lit candle set fire to items around it and the table upon which it sat, said Jason Mowbray, deputy chief state fire marshal.

The automatic fire alarm alerted firefighters, who in five minutes extinguished a small fire nearing a highly flammable sofa, Mowbray said.

“If the sofa had been on fire, it would have been much different,” he said.
