Panel sought to study fitness

Legislation awaiting consideration in the House of Delegates would create a commission to study ways to curb childhood obesity in Virginia.

The panel would be charged with looking at nutrition, activity and health education programs in the commonwealth’s public schools and making suggestions about how those efforts can be increased to improve physical fitness among youngsters.

“An alarming number of our young Virginians are becoming overweight or obese at earlier and earlier ages,” Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling said Tuesday at a news conference highlighting the bill.

“We need to educate parents and young people about the importance ofputting down the video games and going outside for some physical activity.”
