1. Contain Turner » Atlanta running back Michael Turner rushed for 1,699 yards in 2008, but is on pace for just under 1,300 yards this season. He has not had many explosive runs, partly because he’s faced more 3-4 fronts, which has helped take away some cutback lanes. And partly because he hasn’t made enough defenders miss. However, he’s coming off his best game this season (151 yards) and when he’s on, the Atlanta offense is difficult to stop.

2. Beware of the passing game » Quarterback Matt Ryan has struggled compared to 2008. He’ll stare at receivers and can be pressured into mistakes. The Redskins need to be aggressive attacking him. However, he still makes plays thanks in part to his demeanor and the talent around him. Tight end Tony Gonzalez is a force in the red zone and on third downs. The hard part is knowing how to defend him; defensive backs are too small, while linebackers aren’t fast enough.

3. Produce early » The Redskins are tied for last in the league in first-half scoring, at 6.2 points per game. After working on a game plan for two weeks, they must get some early offense to give them confidence and momentum. They need lots of both. To do this, the Redskins’ offensive line must handle the crowd noise with excellent communication. Otherwise, we’ll see slow linemen getting slow starts. That communication will be needed when Atlanta runs its stunts.

REDSKINS » After getting away from the chaos for a week, the Redskins appear refreshed. The bye week enabled key players to get healthy. And playing on the road might help them. But key problems remain.
