An 18-year-old man from Ladson, S.C., was arrested Thursday evening for attempting to join the Islamic State, the Justice Department said Friday evening.
Zakaryia Abdin appeared before a judge in a Charleston, S.C., courtroom Friday morning. Prosecutors said Abdin tried to travel overseas to join the terrorist group.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force apprehended Abdin at the Charleston International Airport just before he boarded a flight on his trip to the Middle East.
Ladson is 20 miles northeast of Charleston.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Kittrell of the District of South Carolina and Trial Attorney Jennifer Burke of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting the case.
