Poll: 49 percent of Americans agree with Trump on refugee ban

More Americans trust Donald Trump to keep the country safe than presidential rival Hillary Clinton following the mass shooting in Orlando, according to a Morning Consult survey released Wednesday.

After the June 12 attack, Trump reiterated calls to halt the flow of refugees from Muslim countries because they could not be vetted.

Forty-nine percent of respondents backed the billionaire businessman’s refugee ban, 40 percent opposed it and 11 percent said they were not sure in the June 15-18 poll, which had a 2 percent margin of error.

Voters were even more supportive of a ban when asked about immigrants from Syria and Iraq, where the Islamic State has significant control of the land.

Among all political groups, 56 percent said that Syrians should be temporarily banned and 55 percent believe Iraqi citizens should not be allowed in to the U.S.

Forty-one percent of voters support the presumptive GOP nominee while 37 percent trust the Democratic candidate. Among those who see security issues as the most pressing problem, 57 percent sided with Trump compared to 25 percent who picked Clinton.
