Caps Second Period Update

Sabres 3, Caps 0

Going to be hard for the Caps to pull this one out. Sabres have yet to lose this season -10-0 – when ahead entering the third period. Goals by Nathan Gerbe – his first in the NHL – and Henrik Tallinder – the second by a Buffalo defenseman tonight – were the difference in the second period. Oh, along with goalie Ryan Miller, who again made a handful of fantastic saves to keep the Caps off the board. Washington has 22 shots. The Sabres have 24 on Jose Theodore.

Washington has not trailed by three goals in a game this season. The Caps are road weary, playing their third game in five nights and might be down a defenseman as Brian Pothier left midway through the second and did not return. Tyler Sloan can switch back to defense, if needed. Still – chances of a comeback seem remote. Washington thought it had a power play at 15:55 of the second when Alex Ovechkin was tripped down in front of the net by Derek Roy. But referees ruled the Ovechkin dove and sent him to the box, too. Caps will need two or three power plays to get back into this one in the third.
