The rover’s photos of the Gale Crater show that a winding waterway once carried along pebbles and sand grains that became trapped in rock. Other indicators suggest the river was between ankle deep and waist deep.

Police were called to Engine 10 on Florida Avenue in Northeast to investigate a property crime: Someone drew a cartoon mustache on a picture of the chief, News4 reported. Relations between the firefighters and the chief have been tense following disputes over shift hours and changes in the department logo. But Ellerbe brushed it off. “I talked to our internal affairs,” Ellerbe told NBC4, “told them don’t even worry about it.”

Mona Williams, of Utah, sent an email urging her family and friends to fast and pray on Sunday for Romney, the Republican presidential nominee and fellow Mormon. But her email went viral, and people across the country are now joining in. It’s traditional for Mormons to fast for a day each month and pray for a particular purpose. Romney trails President Obama in recent polls, but Williams said, “I know fasting and praying brings about miracles.”
