A congresswoman is nominating the woman who accused Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault for the prestigious John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.
Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., called professor Christine Blasey Ford “a true American (s)hero who sacrificed so much to do what was right for our country and for the pursuit of truth of justice” in an announcement on Twitter.

Ford came forward after Kavanaugh was nominated, accusing him of sexual misconduct at a party while the two were in high school. Ford, a psychologist who lives in California and teaches at Palo Alto University, and Kavanaugh testified about the alleged incident in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings.
While two other women also came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct, none of the accusations were corroborated. Kavanaugh’s nomination was sent to the Senate floor in a party-line vote. He was confirmed there, 50-48.
The Profile in Courage Award, established in 1989 to “recognize and celebrate” political courage, is administrated by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and decided by a 13-member committee, according to the foundation’s website.
Ford, who had initially wanted to remain anonymous, moved out of her home and took leave from her job after she received death threats for making the accusation.
