Sen. Ted Cruz does not think it was appropriate for President Trump to call on China to investigate his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.
Speaking on CBS’ Face the Nation Sunday, the Texas Republican explained that only Americans should determine the outcome of our elections and said other countries shouldn’t be involved in any way.
“Look, of course not. Elections in the U.S. should be decided by Americans,” he said. “It’s not the business of foreign countries, any foreign countries, to be interfering in our elections.”
The comments come after Trump publicly said China should open an investigation into Biden. The remark drew condemnation from Democrats and some Republicans, such as Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney.
Trump is facing an ongoing impeachment inquiry launched by Democrats in the House after a whistleblower alleged that Trump wrongly pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Biden and his son Hunter’s business dealings in the country.
Cruz emphasized Sunday that investigations should be handled domestically and not by foreign powers.
“Foreign countries should stay out of American elections. That’s true for Russia, that’s true for Ukraine, that’s true for China, that’s true for all of them. It should be the American people deciding elections,” Cruz said. “We should decide our elections.”
