Hillary Clinton made a veiled attack on President Trump during a eulogy she gave at Rep. Elijah Cummings’s funeral.
The former secretary of state began by pointing out that Cummings shared a first name with an Old Testament prophet.
“Like the prophet, our Elijah could call down fire from heaven, but he also prayed and worked for healing,” she said Friday. “He weathered storms and earthquakes but never lost his faith. Like that Old Testament prophet, he stood against corrupt leadership of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel.”
According to the Book of Kings, Ahab, the seventh ruler of Israel during the ninth century B.C., “did evil in the sight of the Lord, more than all who were before him.” He practiced idolatry, disobeyed God’s commands, stole a vineyard, and murdered an innocent man. Jezebel was his wife, a Phoenician princess who adorned herself in fine clothing and jewelry, worshiped the god Baal, and has been portrayed through the ages as a prostitute and murderer.
“The American people want to live their lives without fear of their leaders. And as leaders, we have a responsibility to keep the promises made when running for office, to make the lives of Americans better,” she added. “He pushed back against the abuse of power. He was unwavering in his defense of our democracy. He had little tolerance for those who put party ahead of country or partisanship above truth.”
Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama both gave eulogies to Cummings, who died suddenly last week. He was the chairman of the House Oversight Committee and a leading figure in the impeachment proceedings against Trump.
