Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Mark Meadows, R-N.C., have asked Attorney General William Barr to update the House Oversight Committee on the status of an investigation into former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.
Jordan, the ranking member of the Oversight Committee, and Meadows, also a member of the panel, requested an update in a letter sent to Barr on Wednesday, saying transparency about the matter “is vital to restoring the FBI’s integrity.”
“The Justice Department Office of Inspector General (DOJ OIG) referred McCabe’s lack of candor to the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia almost a year ago. McCabe’s pattern of lies to FBI and OIG officials was particularly troublesome because they were intended to cover up media leaks that would benefit McCabe personally and professionally,” the letter said.
A lawyer for McCabe said last month a criminal investigation into whether the former FBI official made false statements about leaks to the media remains open.
McCabe was fired in March 2018, hours before he was set to retire and collect a full pension, after the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General determined that he misled investigators about the role he had in leaking information to the Wall Street Journal in October 2016 about the investigation into the Clinton Foundation.
McCabe admitted he allowed subordinates to speak to a reporter to correct what he said was false information, but denied that he lied under oath.
The inspector general referred its findings to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia in April 2018 for possible charges.
