Shoulder injury for Zimmerman

Third baseman says it’s not serious, expects a Tuesday return

Diving to make brilliant plays at third base has become the signature move of Ryan Zimmerman, especially early this season. His recklessness, however, has apparently left him with a sore right shoulder. He felt pain in the batting cage before Saturday’s game against the Marlins and was a late scratch. Manager Davey Johnson doesn’t sound particularly concerned.

“He has a little inflammation in there,” Johnson said. “Ryan felt confident about it.”

Johnson had planned to rest Zimmerman on Sunday. He fouled a pitch off his foot on Friday night and Johnson wanted to give him two days rest with Monday’s off day. But now it will likely become three days of rest.

“It’s like a jammed finger – give it a couple days rest and it will be okay,” Zimmerman said. “I was warming up today and it was a little tight … I have no doubt that by Tuesday it will be fine.”
