Officials set to discuss airport security

Residents with questions about security at Carroll County Regional Airport ? which was robbed last month ? may get some answers tonight from security officials.

The public is invited to ask questions of representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, Maryland Transportation Authority and Federal Aviation Administration about the Westminster airport, said Joseph Varrone, airport administrator for the county.

Ron Buczkowski, a member of the Carroll Joint Neighborhood Association, a residents? group formed in April in opposition to a possible runway expansion, said in a telephone interview Sunday that he plans to ask officials why the airport has only one guard during the day and none at night.

When a helicopter buzzed his house two months ago, Buczkowski said he telephoned the airport to find out more about the incident, only to hear a recording.

Maryland State Police had to ramp up security at the airport after someone broke into its hangars and stole gasoline and a tool, The Examiner reported in August.

The Carroll County commissioners have set aside $700,000 to install security cameras at the airport off Airport Road in Westminster.
