WEX Wakeup: 4-year-old hostage released; Christie will stay in race despite NH primary results

A young American-Israeli girl, 4, was among 17 hostages who were released from Hamas in Gaza on Sunday, the latest group to be freed. Abigail Edan, the young girl who celebrated her fourth birthday in captivity days ago, marks the first American to be released from the terror group since the parties agreed to a temporary ceasefire that commenced on Friday. Prior to her release, President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan said there were nine United States citizens and one U.S. Green Card holder being held by Hamas.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie expressed his determination to stay in the race no matter the results of the New Hampshire primary. Christie appeared on State of the Union on Sunday, where host Dana Bash pointed out that opponent Donald Trump is still in the lead in New Hampshire by about 40 points, per a CNN poll. Bash went on to suggest that Christie join Nikki Haley on the same ticket, as together they would be polling around 30 points.

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX) claimed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has been “completely derelict in his duty” of securing the southern border, which he described as “a national security issue.” Jackson’s comment comes as several House Republicans are looking to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the border, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) leading the movement for the efforts. Jackson noted that while Republicans do not control the Senate nor the White House, the party does control the House of Representatives, and it should use what power it has to hold Mayorkas accountable.
