A program to keep the roads clear of drunken drivers provided more than 2,000 free taxi trips to holiday revelers this season, according to its organizers. The Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s SoberRide project began offering nightly taxi trips worth up to $30 starting on Dec. 16 to those who needed a ride home. The idea is to give people an option other than driving when they have been out drinking.
Running until 6 a.m. Sunday, it provided 2,032 trips total during the two-week period, with 396 trips on New Year’s Eve. – Kytja Weir
