Trump blasts Bette Midler as ‘washed-up psycho’ over fake quote

LONDON — President Trump prepared to leave the U.K. in much the same way that he arrived — by taking aim at his enemies on Twitter.

This time it was the veteran performer Bette Midler in his sights during the early hours of the morning. He described her as a “washed-up pyscho” in a row over a fabricated quote.

Hours earlier Midler had apologized for tweeting a long debunked comment in which Trump had discussed running for president as a Republican because “they’re dumbest group of voters in the country.”

Midler’s acknowledgement was not enough for Trump, however.

He tweeted: “Washed up psycho BetteMidler was forced to apologize for a statement she attributed to me that turned out to be totally fabricated by her in order to make ‘your great president’ look really bad.

“She got caught, just like the Fake News Media gets caught. A sick scammer!”

Midler, known for hits such as “The Rose” and “Wind Beneath My Wings,” has been a frequent and noisy critic of Trump.

“Trump said he was greeted by thousands in the UK, but they were actually thousands of protesters,” she tweeted during the visit. “How does he always hear the opposite of the truth?”

Trump launched his attack in the early hours of the morning, following a dinner at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in London.

Minutes earlier he took aim at the Democratic leader in Senate, criticizing Chuck Schumer’s stance on Mexico and tariffs.

His trip began in a blaze of controversy when he tweeted his contempt for Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, minutes before Air Force One touched down.
