President Trump accused the “LameStream Media” of trying to a cause a recession Wednesday morning.
“The Fake News LameStream Media is doing everything possible the ‘create’ a U.S. recession, even though the numbers & facts are working totally in the opposite direction,” the president tweeted. “They would be willing to hurt many people, but that doesn’t matter to them. Our Economy is sooo strong, sorry!”

Trump’s tweet comes a week after the stock market plunged 800 points, leading a number of economists to suggest a recession could come in the near future. According to a survey conducted by the National Association for Business Economics, 72% of economists polled believe the United States will face a recession in 2020 or 2021.
The president’s allegations that the members of the media are actively hoping for a recession has been floated by Fox News personalities in recent days.
On Monday, the hosts of Fox & Friends made the claim, with Ainsley Earhardt specifically saying it’s “so obvious.” Charles Payne, who was on part of that segment, argued that there “seems to be a deliberate attempt” to force a recession.
Similarly, Martha MacCallum accused MSNBC and CNN personalities of being “giddy” at the idea of a recession, last week.
