Democratic Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has reportedly spent over $300 on her new hairstyle at an upscale Washington salon.
Ocasio-Cortez, 29, spent $80 on a haircut and an additional $180 on low lights at the high-end Last Tangle salon in the district. If she tipped the customary 20%, her bill would have totaled $312 for a single hair style.
The freshman congresswoman from New York has made waves supporting socialist ideals since assuming office in early 2019. Despite fighting for inflated government-mandated minimum wages and promoting the “Green New Deal,” Ocasio-Cortez expressed disappointment when she did not receive a congressional raise to her $174,000 salary this summer. She also stated that luxury apartment should be a “basic right” in a social media video posted this summer.
Ocasio-Cortez has stridently advocated that the government should control wealth in the United States, suggesting that the wealthiest Americans should primarily shoulder the financial requirements of the “Green New Deal,” which has been estimated to cost trillions of dollars.
Critics of Ocasio-Cortez noted some hypocrisy in her choice to spend so extravagantly on a hair style, considering her socialist political ideals. “There is nothing wrong with spending money to make yourself look better, especially as a personality who depends upon visual mediums for her make power,” said Richard Manning, president of Americans for Limited Government. “But it is a bad look to spend hundreds of dollars to get your hair done to make a video decrying income inequality.”
Social media reaction to reports that Ocasio-Cortez spends extravagant amounts of money on her hair style were critical, coming from all corners of the political spectrum.
“I wish I could spend $300 on a haircut,” said disgraced attorney Michael Avenatti.
I keep seeing ladies on Twitter saying AOC’s $80 haircut was a good deal. No, this is what a good deal looks like: pic.twitter.com/pGscb3D5Zq

Look I wasn’t going to get involved in this @AOC hair scandal. I really wasn’t. Bc I’m a defense reporter and, why? But I cannot NOT remark that the story seems distressed that AOC, a “socialist,” got a $300 haircut instead of…a government-subsidized one?https://t.co/D7q9c4tL0p pic.twitter.com/OJ46UrkBOF

“Why won’t AOC get her hair cut like Jeff Sessions?” is certainly a take pic.twitter.com/sybZxjm26P

You’re not an authentic socialist unless you let your hair grow to the ground in a tangled mess littered with leaves and small animals.https://t.co/vZwJmWjixI
