Spirit jet slides off taxiway in Baltimore after landing in slick conditions

A Spirit Airlines plane skidded off the taxiway at Baltimore/Washington International Airport shortly after landing.

The jet had safely landed after flying in from Las Vegas on Thursday morning when it began taxiing to one of the airport’s terminals. As it was en route, it slid off the pavement and ended up with its front wheel in the grass.

Airport officials said no one was injured during the incident. The airport’s fire and rescue department responded to the scene, and passengers were transported to the terminals using shuttle buses.

“After safely landing and entering the taxiway this morning, the nose wheel of Spirit Airlines flight 696 slowly slid onto the grass while turning a corner and taxiing to the gate. All 111 Guests and Team Members are safe and were transported by bus to the terminal,” the budget airline said in a statement when contacted by the Washington Examiner.

The area had been slick given the powerful winter storm that swept through the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic over the past 24 hours. The storm, dubbed Winter Storm Gail, coated the regions with snow and set records in some parts of the country. About 1.6 inches of snow was registered at the airport.
